there seems to be a good bit of looseness in the shifter mechanism lately,
more than I recall when I bought the car 4 years ago... no problems getting
into and out of the gears, and the transmission shifts fine, just a little
concerned that something's wearing/worn and should be replaced. Suggestions
on what to look for? How to get there?...

I don't know what tranny your car has, but this may help to get you in
    the right direction.

thanks for the input! I downloaded some of the info and diagrams, and will
take a look at the shifter later this week when I get a chance! I'm guessing
the bushings are wearing with age....
