Start with fluid level. Engine running and warm.
Does it look burnt (brown) or smell burnt?

    That's probably an Aisin-Warner 70 transmission. How's the maintenance
    on the tranny?

I'd replace the fluid and change out the strainer. Wipe clean the pan.
You can check to see how much debris is in the pan. The problem with
the fairly dirty Aisin is that it has basically no filtration system
and there is a lot of wear and tear as debris load up the fluid.

But by this time the transmission is probably on the way out from
    slipping for a while.

It's gotta be that or the 71, and both are virtually identical. That's
the only auto that was ever offered in the 240 from the early 80s on.
