'94 850 stalling/not starting

Discussion in 'Volvo 850' started by Steven Donnell WA1YKL, Aug 16, 2003.

  1. Hi, Here a strange one I hope someone can guide me on: 94 850 turbo that
intermitently wont start when the engine is hot(after its been running,
then restarted after only a few min). It also "died" briedlfy while
going down the rd the other day too. But after you wait 10 - 20 min for
it to cool down a bit it stats and runs fine,,. I recently replaced the
plugs, as well as the distributor/rotar to try fix it, no luck. The only
fault codes it seems to have is in 2A as: 435 and 436, slow response
from front oxy sensor, and max compfrom rear senor. When it dies, the
you still have electric and all the dash idot lights. The engine cranks,
just no spark,,. It reminds me of the old coroded ECU fuse deal in my
old 245. Any hints ideas? Many thanks Steve

  2. When my 97 850 GLT acted like that a few years ago, it turned
out to be the RPM sensor. The engine had no spark and no fuel,
because if the computer can't sense that the engine is turning over
it won't enable them (to prevent fires, I guess).

  3. Hi, Thanks, I'll check it, looks like it shouldnt be too hard to get at accourding to my Hayes
book,.. Tried replacing the spark coil too, no luck,. One weird item I noticed, is the Service
light that is normally ON when the car is started, then clears after 10 min or so, is OFF the
FIRST time the car is started following at failed start,,,(??). Also noticed a fault code in 1A
of 114( prog selector open/missing)(??). Not sure how long thats been there or if its returned
    seince last failed start. Steve
