98 V70 Radio Code Problem

My daughter ran the battery down on our 98 V70 and had to get
boosted. Of course the radio showed "CODE".

She tried a few different codes and failed to get it to switch on. It
now reads "OFF" and when I enter the correct code nothing happens.

Is this something I can fix myself? Hate to waste all the time and $
going to the dealer to re-program or whatever.

I have a feeling that, the more times you get it wrong, the longer it makes
you wait before allowing you to re-try. It should eventually be ok if you
wait long enough!

OK - I've just checked the handbook for my [UK] 1999 V70 and that says that
after 3 unsuccessful attempts, you have to wait for 2 hours (not a week!)
before re-trying.

BUT, the radio must be continuously powered up (ignition in position 1, and
radio switched on) for the 2-hour period. [Make sure that things like
headlamps are not also on, else you'll flatten the battery again!]

Have you tried that? What does your own handbook say?

Just ask a dealer - you made need your vehicle details / proof of ownership
or the no. off the radio if its an upgrade

Done it several times over the years..

Er . . he *knows* the code - it's just that the radio won't accept *any*
code 'cos the wrong one's been tried too many times.

Yes indeed, I do recall though having to go to a Volvo dealer for a code on
a S40 - and being charfed £5 for it.

When I had the battery replaced on my US '97 850 I had to reset the
code which I tried until it wouldn't take the code again. Then I
turned on the key to Accessory with the radio turned on. Came back a
couple hours later and entered the code and, voila! it worked.

If I were eastender, I think I would look for a different dealer. When
I needed the code for my '97 850 WHICH I DID NOT BUY FROM THE DEALER,
they gladly gave me the number and the procedure to enter it in case I
needed to know and didn't charge me squat.

I have subsequently gone back to that dealer and am constantly amazed
by how much they get for GENUWINE Volvo parts but they're friendly,
knowledgeable and thorough. They've also done some work on my '93 240
and been equally professional -- just pricey. Of course, if I have my
normal mechanic do something requiring dealer parts, they ain't any
cheaper.

Apologies - missed that - has the radio been changed from the original that
came with the car ? - my dealer has been able to work off the ser no. on the
radio as well instead of the car chassis no / reg no... and has never
charged - if they do try just ringing any other in the country !

Will try leaving the key on Acc. for a couple hours and, if not
stolen, will try then.

Thanks.

Well, I am fortunate to have a garage in which to do this. If you
don't have a garage and the weather isn't too inhospitable (it'll be
78F here in Dallas today), get a good book and sit there to keep the
thieves away for the requisite two hours. If your weather is to cold,
a) move or b) drive without a radio until YOUR spring.
