My AC compressor is dead in my 960. Dealer quotes $1200 start to finish.
My local indy is at $900. Can I go used? How in the world can this be
this much money?

Sounds typical... friends of mine have dropped 1000-1500 on their Chryslers,
which have frequent A/C failures.

Luckily we haven't had to do the compressor on our Volvo, but the price
seems about right for a dealer.

Today's small quiet compressors have lots of moving parts, and so are
expensive. Factor in a couple of hours of labour and a recharge.

Replace tt with t (twice!) and remove parentheses to email me directly.
(But I check the newsgroup more often than this email address.)

Look at a junkyard first though, there's a good chance you can find a decent
compressor for a lot cheaper than a new one, particularly if it comes from
an area with a cooler climate, it won't have been used as much.

Make sure that the fittings are clean of dust inside the fitting, as all AC
components need to be scrupulously clean inside.

Worth a shot...Thanks.
