Am I about to pay too much for this 240 wagon?

It's a 92 240 wagon, automatic, black exterior and cloth interior.
According to the guy who has it, the thing is in not good but excellent
condition. It's got 193,000 miles on it. Had the timing belt changed not
too long ago, always serviced at the original volvo dealership, with the
records to prove it. His price is $3500 and he won't dicker.

This guy buys and sells volvos that dealers can't sell and is a wholesaler
of sorts. He bought it from the Volvo dealer where it was traded in (and
serviced), for somewhat more than he would normally pay for such a car, he
says. His opinion is that, at $3,500, I would be paying fair top dollar for
the car. IOW, even he agrees I'm not getting a deal; he thinks $3000 would
be a deal, but says he can't sell it for that. The extra $500 doesn't worry
me too much -- unless I'm really getting taken at that price.

What do you all think?

He's also got a white 88 (or 89) sedan with 105k miles on it, for $2,500,
and he says that one is in remarkable condition (as opposed to excellent)
and is stunning. But, well, I need a wagon, not a sedan....

I have a good friend who bought a '93 240 with 160,000 miles in "excellent"
condition for $4700 last year. The previous owner threw in a set of
snow tyres (and rims). The snow tyres had been used for only one winter.

Since then, he has found that the car has needed a new thermostat. He
also installed a new CD/mp3 player, but that wasn't something the car
needed -- the original radio/cassette worked okay.

be carefull of remarkable condition

remarkable condition on are car that age indicates body work been done, then
you gotta wonder why it was done.

i.e might have been pranged and sprayed up

i'm saying for sure that is is but just look around the shut lines
carefully.

Have you actually seen it? It could be a great deal, or not. You
need to have the car gone over thoroughly by a Volvo mechanic as well
as have one review the records. Get permission to talk to the Volvo
dealer about mechanical condition. How much $$$ may need to be spent
in near future? Is car in a part of country where rust could be a
factor? Average around 15K/yr, but what type of daily driving? Towing?
Accidents?

Where are you located? My '88 white 240 wagon is for sale. It has 340
000 kms (212 500 miles) and I think it is well worth the 3000$ CAN I'm
asking for it. I'm in the Montréal vicinity.

Richard.
