I am still looking for a good 700 series sedan to replace my old
Ford. Getting harder to find one, in very good condition,
    all the time.
I see more 900 series cars, for sale.

I have never driven a 900 series car.
Are they similar to the 700 series?

Was the inline 6 engine, non-interference?
Was it turbo charged or did the 2 more pistons make up power wise.

After driving my 780Garrett and 765/Mitsu,
I can't go back to a power system like my 89-245.
I am so spoiled after driving the 780 for a few years.

A 960/40 sedan looks similar, is it?

1990 was the last year of the 760 turbo. That model was dropped for 1991,
and the 940 was introduced in 1991 with the same front-end as the 760, but
a redesigned backend. It was offered only with a B230 (turbo was also
offered), i.e. the PRV V6 was dropped.
The 960 was first offered in 1992. The inline 6 engine is interference.
It was not turbo-charged. Turbo-charged variants of this engine are
    offered in the S80 now.
Only on the outside. 940s are redblock, 960s aren't. 960s are more
    luxurious on the inside.

Yes, the 940's are virtually identical inside and out. The 960's have a
different motor/tranny, etc. Not as bulletproof as the 4, but still a very
    good motor.

The 900 series sedans are simply 700 series sedans with a different back
window, trunk lid and tail lights. (Even the back doors were
interchangeable.) Wagons didn't have these differences, and are
identical. An exception to this was the 1995 and newer 960 which had a
redesigned suspension as well as the cosmetic changes.

The following applies to North America:
The "960" had the turbo 4 in 1991, but was called the 940SE, after that
only the 6. The 6 is smoother, but has less midrange torque than the
turbo 4, which was installed in 940s up to 1995. Also, there are some
light pressure turbos (B230FK) in the later 940s. After '93 the turbo
    moniker was dropped.

150K Kms and 11 long hard years of long distance runs, towing trailers,
slogging thru the city, short hop driving... Never one engine related
problem on our 960! - I've never even seen the check engine light (except
when the key is in position II). Our Volvo mechanic said it's running like a
    new engine, basically...

We've had better luck with our 6 cylinder then any of our "redblock"
Volvo's - the whole car is better too, our interior looks nearly mint (minus
some stress marks on the leather - no cracks or tears tho). We've had oil
leakage problems and balancing shaft problems with our 240's/740's
(B-shaft - 16V DOHC engine, oil leaks with our 8V's)

Drove home from Montreal to the Toronto (600km drive) area today... it's
amazing, that 11 year old car was definately not being left in the right
hand lane... 120-130kph the whole way back, in lines with the big luxo SUVs,
the large sedans, and the highway cruisers - and the engine was silently
spinning away at 2500 rpm or less, begging for someone to press the gas down
and show all those big cars up..... And we got 9L per 100Kms. I'd go 960 if
it were me (Sedan, we have the wagon, and the A/C has a hard time keeping
the whole box cool, plus the sedan looks better).
