Back seat latch broken on 2001 s40

I just got a 2001 s40, and one of the back seats has a broken latch. It is in the locked and upright position thus restricting the access through to the trunk. It also makes it impossible to remove the latch assembly for repair. I have tried to pop it open using a screwdriver to no avail. There seems to be no other way to get the seat down. Anyone have any ideas to help?
