After replacing the rotors and pads I still have squeaking brakes.
My mechanic tells me this is common on old Volvos and I should try
pads from the Volvo dealer. Does anyone have an opinion on this or
know what I can try to quiet the brakes.

What brand of pads did you use? You could try beveling the leading and
trailing edges on a belt sander.

Bevelling the edges of the pads (in the next response) is a good idea.

If you have already tried anti-squeal brake grease and shims, here is an
unusual thing to try- take the pads out and spray WD-40 on the back of them.
In the past I've found WD-40 works as well for this as any anti-squeal
grease you can get in the store. Of course, don't get too much on the
friction side.

Car is 740, year 1990 station wagon:
Motor (2.3 L) stalls when driving. Can happen when motor is warm or cold,
driving slow or fast. "Check enging" light comes on. Starts up again without
any problem. This has happened about 5-6 times during the last month. Seems
to be some intermittent problem. Took it to dealer. The check engine light
is still on. Dealer says that when computer is checked, states that engine
light came on because of load sensor signal or speed (speedometer? ) input
signal. Cannot repair it because signals are all OK now. Cold be problem w
computer, load sensor, some loose wire, or whatever. Told me to come back
when it cannot be started, because then they can diagnose it and see what is
wrong. Has anyone experienced similar problem???? Cannot take car far from
home, because never knows when it will act up again.

One quick thing to try is while cruising at about 60 KPH (35 MPH) apply the
brakes while keeping the throttle depressed to keep the speed up for about
10-15 seconds do this 2 or 3 times. If this doesn't work for long check the
discs for machine marks if so machine them off and try anti squeal paste on
the pads on replacement.

You have not refitted the shims and have not carefully lubricated the rubbing
areas and backs of pads with "CopperEase" or similar. This is the trouble with
non-OEM parts, the shims are removed with the old pads and not replaced with the
new ones. You can obtain a set of shims from your Volvo dealer.

Cheers, Peter.

I just replaced the back pads on mine ('87 740 Turbo wagon) with the
semi metallic pads that IPD sells. The anti rattle pads were included.
The fronts have never made noise. Tell your mechanic that a '87 is just
getting broken in and is no way an old Volvo. Sheesh. My '87 is the
newest Volvo we have.
