I had my 97 850 T-5 with 200K miles at the Volvo dealer trying to run
down a problem where the engine sputters when the turbo starts to run
up. I am the second owner, taking over at 160K from the first owner. I
do not know when/where he had the timing belt done (assuming it was
done some time in the first 160K miles...I'll verify this weekend)

The foreman/master mechanic is claiming that the timing belt is off by
like 6 teeth.

Is this even possible for the car to run almost perfectly, getting 26
MPG (80% highway), with the timing belt that far off? I would expect
bent valves, myself, not decent mileage and good performance, if I
stay off the turbo. (he has also recommended replacing the turbo
intake pipe, as there us unmetered air coming in, and the turbo
control valve...this all with the timing supposedly so far off)

What do you think?

I'm skeptical. The intake and exhaust cams are separate, but I think
that having either one off by that much would cause massive driveability
problems.

Never Mind. I took a look this morning and it's set up just right.

Now, all that's left is to find out if they are total scammers or
completely incompetent.

By the way, this is Galpin in Santa Clarita, CA. I recommend you STAY
AWAY.

I'm in the UK and thought I'd look them up with Google Earth, (just
being nosey!), and went to their site to find the address.
(I trust it is the branch at 23645 Creekside Road.)

The Galpin map is strange - what Google Earth labels as Magic Mountain
Pky, the Galpin map shows as Valencia Bvd. There is no room for
ambiguity either. (Creekside road appears to be correct.)

Is Google Earth wrong or is it Galpin?

I'm 6000 miles away.

dont know about a Volvo running with six teeth missing but I heard the girls
down in Alabama can run very quick with no teeth at all .
