Dashboard bulb light is on... but no burned out lights...

That little light in the dash that tells you when you have a burned out light
is on, but all my lights appear to be working. I believe that this circuit
looks for inequal current going to the two sides of the car. Any ideas how to
track this down?

As an added data point, about a month ago, the light in my (broken) center
console was shorting against something and blowing the fuse (and lighting this
dash light). The short is fixed, but the light is still on. Sometimes it
takes a whle to come to full brightness; you start the car, turn on the
headlights, and the dash light starts very dim and then gradually gets
brighter. Putting it in reverse can make the light go out, or almost out, but
then it starts to come slowly back on again.

Thanks for any ideas!

if you have replaced a bulb recently (like a parking light, running
light, etc.) and didn't use the correct value, that can do it (like a
15w on one side and a 20w on the other sort of a thing). Also, any
bulb with a high resistance like if the socket is corroded or if a
brass base bulb instead of the 'european' chrome base is used will set
off the light.

The PO of my car had replaced the third brake light with the wrong
value bulb and it driove me nuts until I figured it out.

Get a piece of scotch bright and start cleaning bulbs and sockets. A
schmear of silicone grease can help resist corrosion.
