Hi,

Here in Québec we don't have mandatory smog tests, but I always wondered
if my '88 240 Wagon would pass one such test. I'm pretty environmentally
concious. So I went last week to a free clinic and was very surprised
(as where the staff of the clinic) to discover that my car, at 340 000
km, was rating way below the average emission ratios for new cars!
Results were : 23 ppm for HC (max for a new car is 110 ppm) and 0,000%
(non-detectable) for Co (max for a new car is 0,85%).

Am I proud of this car? Good girl...

Richard.

Wow, sounds good. Our 1993 960 also did some serious ass kicking of new cars
in emissions tests the last time we brought it in. It got around low 30's
for hydrocarbons, and something to the order or 0.15 for Co. Looks like you
beat us pretty good, but then again a 6 cylinder most likely would put out a
bit more pollutants (and we tested in the winter, when we rarely drive the
car, and the exaust starts smelling like sulphur due to this).... You don't
even want to know how poorly our old VW, with a disconnected O2 sensor
did... it needed a little engine work to get that sensor going, the Volvo
still beat it when it re-tested, quite easily too.

Similar results for my 86 240 DL. My Volvo mechanic friend tells me
that is standard for these cars.
