I recently blew the engine in my 1987 760 Turbo. The turbo seemed to be
working fine. What is the best replacement engine? What type of milage
shoudl I be looking for in a used engine? How much should I look to spend?
Can someone recommend a good inexpensive Volvo mechanic in the Louisville,
KY area.

It should have a B230FT engine. That is all that is available unless you
want to swap out for a small-block Chevy or similar.

Cheers, Peter.

What's wrong with the engine? They rarely completely blow, unless you
overboosted and broke a rod.

The engine from any 740 or 760 or 940 Turbo from '85 to '94 will drop in.
Mileage shouldn't be a big issue if it's in good shape but I'd generally
look for something under 200K or close to whatever is on the car already.
Prices will be all over the map, I wouldn't pay more than $350 myself but
that's just because that's what the local yard here charges for them.

Thanks I think I did over boost it. There was a big whole in the side.
Where can I find one of those $350 engines :-).

Oops, yeah check the hose on the wastegate when you put it back together.

Pick A Part in Olympia, WA gets them occasionally. There's two Pull A Part
yards in Lynnwood and Everett that fairly regularly get them but you have to
pull them yourself there. As a bonus the engines are only $150 though, but
the turbo is invariably gone already.

The hose to the waste gate was damaged. You all are so smart. I love my
volvo and love being a volvo owner.

It's reasonably common when the car gets old, I bet the extra power was fun
while it lasted though.
