Just noticed while I had the glove box out that the hinge that moves
the external air exclusion flap in and out on my '93 854 has broken.

Not a big problem since I rarely it anyway, but I clearly want to make
sure it remains in a permanently open position (ie, letting air in).

I reckon this is when the rod that's directly connected to the flap is
pushed as far forward (ie, towards the engine bay) as possible. Anyone
concur / beg to differ?

TIA.

I can't answer your question directly, but if you remove the plastic
panel at the base of the windshield that the wiper pivots poke through,
you can see the actual recirc. door. You may have to remove the cabin
filter if fitted, if not, now's a good time to add one.
