fix antenna or replace?

  1. My 1988 740 Station Wagon has developed a number of foibles, the latest
being that the radio antenna doesn't go up and down. I have the "car
wash" switch set for antenna to work, and I hear the motor going when I
    turn radio on or off.

I managed to open up the antenna assembly, but it's all rather
confusing. Sort of a chain drive, and what appears to be an air hose
    going to the bottom.

Is this fixable? If not, do I need an antenna specifically made for
    Volvo?

    thanks in advance

The air hose is actually to drain the water out that gets in around the
mast. Chances are the problem(s) are at the top where the mast is
jammed in with dirt and/or corrosion, or the plastic "rack" that
attaches to the mast is broken. In either case a new mast will fix the
    problem.
