fix tranny "kickdown" cable or replace?

My '92 240 with 128K and auto tranny has a problem...

The cable that attaches to the throttle pulley and goes to the tranny is
sometimes failing to retract. This confuses the tranny and it then does not
    shift right...

The cable is expensive, and this one looks fine. No fraying or rust. I've
dribbled a little oil into it and that helps but it's still not "right".

Would it be feasible to say, flush the cable with brake cleaner and then relube
it with light oil, like gun oil? Or is it a wast of time and should I just buy
    a new one?

    Thanks!
