Hi Guys,

So okay, I finally got my 740 gle started today. It's running a little
rough though, and there is a steady flow of smoke from the outputs of
the flame trap that connect to the intake hose (pre-throttle body), and
the intake manifold (just post-TB). When they are disconnected, the
engine runs like a top, when they are connected the idle is sporadic,
and there is some hesitation at speeds. I just cleaned the flame trap
itself, is there something else that should be cleaned or checked? A
breather box or something?

Thanks again,

Zeke

If you do not have a turbo fitted to your car you will need to replce the
filter in the flame trap and thoroughly wash out the two pipes (large and
small) and the spigot the small hose fits onto on top of the manifold. This
should free up the obstruction in the PCV system. A kit is sold that
lengthens the pipe from the oil recuperator to the flame trap which puts the
trap above the manifold making it easier to reach.

All the best, Peter.

I was told to replace the whole breather box assembly, but what I did
was replace the flame trap assembly (trap filter, small tube and
nipple), then clean the breather box thoroughly with degreaser, hot
soapy water and rinse clear.

I have read successes with cleaning, but most recommend spending the
$35 and get a new breather box and flame trap assembly.

Thanks guys, I'm off to the local Volvo dealer. Just a thought,
dealerships get a bad rap, but are sometimes even cheaper than IPD, or
some of the other mail order houses. Plus sometimes you don't have to
wait for delivery.

Happy motoring,
Zeke

Oooh, that's going to be about $20 plus more than somewhere like VLV
World. If possible, I would order online unless you're in a hurry.
