Gearbox problem

I have a 1986 Volvo 740 GLE Auto 2 days ago it stopped driving in D-3-2-1, I have reverse. Now I have raised the rear of the Car disconnected the shift lever and manually put the car in drive the rear wheels turn, the same with the other forward gears, however when the wheels are back on the ground it goes nowhere. The gearbox is: Model number 1043010323, 4 HP 22. I have had no help here in NZ, I do not want to send it to the wreckers. can any one help
