I just saw (and drove) the strangest animal!
A 1995 940 turbo with...
No trunk badge denoting a turbo
No leather interior
No alloy wheels
No sunroof
No boost gage in the instrument cluster

It was a base model 940 with none of the options
that up until now I thought were standard on
most turbo model 940s.

I would think that it's been retrofitted with
a turbo except that I can't believe anyone would
be silly enough to do that to a base model...

Has anyone else ever seen a 940 like this?

not me.......sounds like a retro fitted one.....be careful
w/that...i understand there are a lott of changes and stresses
on a turbo vs. non 940....tranny, cooling, a few other items
i am sure....lots of 940t around if thats what you are looking
for...i need a 940t core motor w/less than 100k miles...if
anyone is aware of one...thanx !!! and good luck...how did it drive?

I've seen a rare few 240 Turbos like this, they were intended to be sold as
police cruisers. I wouldn't be surprised in the least if a few 700/900
series turbos of this nature were sold, though the lack of a boost gauge
does surprise me.. For that matter I didn't think you could get a 940
without leather and a sunroof, I've never seen one of those either.

Never seen one, but it could have been made for another market.
You might check to see if the engine serial goes with the body serial
number.

Does anyone know when Volvo stopped using a boost gauge in turbo
models?

I got the VIN and it confirms that the car was built with a B230FT.

Weird...

Yeah it sounds like it was one of the ones intended for the police cruiser
market. Volvo police cars are not common in the US, but I do see them from
time to time, and in parts of Europe they're everywhere. They usually have
base trim with turbo motors.

In the UK (and EU I believe) this represents a lower pressure Turbo.
940 GLEs after 1995 (I think) where all LPT (rather than normally
aspirated) and did not mention Turbo or have guages. The GLE's where
slighly more luxurious than the SE's.

Driving the LPT is quite good, although the max power is a little lower,
it has better torque (higher piston compression ratio) and the MPG is
35+ (compared with 24MPG on my SE Turbo) according to another family
member. SE=Sports Edition.

I drove the LPT for a while while sorting a stalling problem and took it
on a 1 hr drive to a job interview, the place was quite far into the
country and the roads were good with lots of overtaking opportunities, I
can say it was much easier to overtake compare to the SE as the power
was instantly there. Turbo lag is not bad on the SE, but compared to a
real high torque car like an older 360 GLE its definately not instant,
even at 2500rpm.
