how do you know the clutch is bad

how does one know when the a/c compressor clutch is bad? The reason I ask is
beacuse my a/c compressor is starting to make a noise when it's on. I don't
believe it to be a belt because it doesn't do it when the compressor cycles
to off. Thanks. Buh bye.

It's probably the compressor itself.
