Installing alpine cd changer in a Volvo S40 2002

    I am looking to install an Alpine cd changer in a friend's Volvo S40
    2002. The dealer told my friend that even if some else installs the
    changer, the head unit's software has to be updated? Is this true?
    Sounds like the dealer is full of bull? Thanks for any information.
