This sounds dumb but there are four lights above one another on each
side of the rear of my 1990 740 wagon. The lower three are easy but what
is the top one for??

There's a bulb in there but it doesn't come on with any switch that I've
found.

Thanks much,

Perk (:>)

Rear fog lamp, turn on the headlights and then turn on the switch next
to the one for your front fog lamps. Depending on year and locale, there
may be sockets in one or both sides.

Also, headlights may have to be dimmed (dipped) for rear fog light(s) to
operate.

Thanks all,

They're the fog lights alright. I got them to work but all I really did
though is remove the fuse and clean the contacts a bit.

Turned on the headlights and the switch and Presto !!, they were on.

All the best,

I find that terminology confusing for some reason. Here the main beams
are what you'd call dipped, and the high beams are what you'd call main
beams.

Now just don't be one of those dorks driving around with them on in the
middle of the summer on clear nights :)

The dual rear fog lights are very handy for tailgaters - just turn
them on and watch the car on your rear bumper back off, because they
think you're braking. Safer than actually hitting the brakes, and more fun.

Easier to just touch the brake pedal just enough to turn the lights on
and not slow the car.

Pain in the ass if it switches off the cruise control.
