Need help 1995 940 AC has a leak. Think it may filler valve...

I need the collective help of this group again!

The AC in my 1995 940 (USA 62,000 mi.) has quit
again. I put some R134 in it about 6 month ago
and it was working very well up until today. I tried
to put some in again thinking I might not have gotten
it topped off the last time.

Here's the thing. When I unscrewed the cap to the
filler valve it had a pretty substantial oily coating.
I figured that if I had a leak it would be the seal
around the shaft in the compressor but, now I'm
not so sure. I've never heard of the filler valve
going bad and I'm not even sure it can be replaced
without the aluminum hose it's attached to.

After reading a little on SwedishBricks I'm hoping
the AC will take some R134 when it cools down
a bit (It was 90º F today here in Florida). But, I'm
still going to have to deal with the leak.

If anyone has any insights in to Volvo 940 AC
I would appreciate any help, opinions...

Yes when you put in more refrigerant make sure that it is the version with
lubricant and leak detector dye incorporated. This will ensure that the
compressor is properly lubed and will show up any leakiness in system by
fluorescence around leak.

 

This may very well be your problem. I have a 93 940 and was having AC
leakage, I would take it in and have it inspected and R134 added and 4-5
months later it would be low again, did this twice. It turned out to be
the fill valve, it has a valve like a tire valve stem and was slowly
leaking. Replaced the valve stem and solved my problems.

I wonder if this is the problem with my 960... last year they changed a pipe
and apparantly this did not fix the problem (tho the AC was cold all last
summer, so I was happy with it, now it's broken again).

Was it expensive and are there things to look for?

 

I think the AC man thru it in N/C. They look Just like a valve stem core,
although im sure the rbbber seal is diferent.

I couldn't take it any more so I broke down and took the 940 to a local indie
Volvo shop.
The mechanic took about 15 minutes to find out that the AC works fine!
The switch in the dash was not turning on the compressor. He then advised me to
bypass it with a toggle switch.

I got on Swedishbricks.com (god bless all that put that web site together!) And,
found that my trouble was fairly common and that a wire needed to be resoldiered
on the AC control. Viola! I did exactly what the directions said and now have
trouble
free AC. Except I still loose a little R134 from that damn valve...
