New Volvo V8 engine - speculations

Just read on

that Volvo is making a new V8 engine... Meant to be transversely mounted in
the P2 chassis... Meant for the XC90. Could this mean the next S80 will be
V8 powered... Maybe those new underpowered Freestyle/Five-Hundred's which
use the P2 chassis will have a "HEMI fighter" V8 engine option, soon - also
it's a 60 degree Vee which means it's at the better angle to make a V6 out
of - think Volvo is going to abandon the inline engines?

My guess would be it'll be an off the shelf Ford V8, perhaps with Volvo
emblems on the camshaft covers.
 
It says its all new design by Volvo and it's exclusive to the XC90 right
now.... Plus it meets all the next gen emissions, the only V8 in the world
to do it... really seems like a brand new engine.
 
It will be a brand new engine - co-developed with Yamaha. Do a goggle
search on Volvo V8.

Hmm, perhaps similar to the V6 used in the Taurus SHO then, don't really
know much about that engine, supposedly it is rather powerful though.

As long as it isn't the PRV thing, developed with Peugeout and Renault.
That was a problem engine. The current inline 6 was developed with
Porsche, and the 5 is a version of this engine.

There was nothing wrong with the SHO engine, it was perhaps the best engine
offered in a Ford product in the last few decades, IMO.

I can't wait to see what some crazy Swede does with this new V8. Who will be
the first to twin turbo the thing and stuff it into a RWD chassis? ;-)

Ford doesen´t have a V8 that fits in current Volvo chassis. Inkluding XC90.
And they want a modern engine to.

It is simply unbelievable that Ford will not use the Volvo motor in Mazda's,
and Ford products, once you spend the big bucks for a modern V8 design you
knock em out and use them wherever you can to armitize the development costs
ASAP!

They have, of course, just completed developing a brand new V8 for
Jaguar, Aston Martin and Land Rover.

So they will now have V8 engines for transverse and longitudinal
fitment...

Just don't let any of the 3rd gen SHO owners catch you saying that :^)

I think it's a shame they didn't develop an SUV chassis with the engine
mounted the other way.. so they could keep the T6 motor and back it up
with a better transmission.
 
Dopn't think anywhere elese but north America would really want a big gas
guzzling V8.
Notice that the V8 is available only in left hand drive version so only
Europe and America can have it, but not UK, Australia and most of Asia.
So the 5 and 6 cylinders gotta stay.

Where else but north america would the xc-90 sell? What country located
between Canada and Mexico, the atlantic and the pacific oceans provides most
of the operational profit that Volvo cars earns, a lot due to the people who
gotta have a SUV?

I dislike SUV's but if you look at a XC-90 you have a tasteful, safe, and
well thought out SUV, the best of a bad bunch, save, perhaps the BMW, VW,
and Porsche--but my sporting side shows!

A XC-90 is not all that quick with the turbo 6, fill one up with people and
the V* will provide a nice boast in power over the turbo 6.

As far as MPG's (KPL's) the V8 often does better then a 6 and especially a
turbo 6 because the V8 is just loafing along while the 6 is using most of
it's power, and the turbos, if so equipped, are called upon often for fuel
robbing boast.

Real world the V8 will not be as big a difference as you might think, but if
you think why not rethink and buy a s-80?
