Porous blocks

On a Toyota newsgroup I frequent an owner has been told by the dealer's shop
that his engine block was porous. IIRC there was a run of engines (was that
in the 940s?) that were plagued by porosity and wondered if anybody had
information about how serious the problem is.

The problem was with early ('91-'95) 960/S90 inline-6 blocks, and it was
caused by an interaction between coolant and the alloy used in the block.
These blocks literally corroded away. I believe that Volvo issued a 'silent
recall' in the mid 1990's and ended up replacing quite a few engines that
were still under warranty by virtue of this program.

This should not be a problem that afflicts any of the 960/S90's which are
currently on the road.

Thanks, Scott. That would be different from the situation with the Toyota,
since this is the first one to show up. Looks like a casting defect in that
one.
