rearaxes and speedometer 245

Discussion in 'Volvo 240' started by kwijlebabulus, Jul 12, 2004.

  1. hello

I have a question about the combination between the SPEED TRANSMITTER in
the rear axle and the SPEEDOMETER in the dashboard.

When I change the rear axle -- a 3.71-- by another rear axle -- a3.54--,
do i have to change the speedo and odometer in the dashboard to?

Or will there be no probleme for reading the right speed?

    I would swap the 87 3.71 rear axle by a 91 3.54 rear axle.

No, the speed pickup is done by a toothed wheel on the differential
carrier, which effectively turns the same speed as the tires. These
pickup wheels do have different numbers of teeth depending on whether
the car had ABS or not.

The "speed transmitter" is not in the rear end, it's at the end of spedo
cable in transmission, you simply go to dealer ask for the easily removable,
color coded, plastic gear that matches the rear end ratio desired?

  4. hello mike

Do you know perhaps that Volvo changed those teeth in the differential like
they did with the 700 series?
With the 700 series they went from 96 teeth to 48 in 89 models and later.

I dont know if they did this with with the 240 till 93.

So practicely the spedo/odemeters are the same, the only thing i have to do is
to change the transmitter on the axle and the axle itself?

As I remember, there are different pickup wheels whether the car has a
limited slip differential or not, but these wheels have the same number
of teeth. There are a different number of teeth on the wheels if the
car originally had ABS. The teeth difference is obvious. There wasn't
a change in the number of teeth as on the 700 series in '89.

That's what you do if the 240 is from 1985 model year or earlier.

  7. Depends on the specific car. The 92-93 240 with ABS has a different
reluctor ring (the part that actually induces the speed signal). This is
matched with a differently configured computer (which also drives the ABS).
So, you need to be sure that the rear axle has the correct ring or a variety
of helpful tools won't work properly, things like the speedometer, odometer,
    cruise control and ABS.

I know this because I'm about to have the correct reluctor ring installed on
the replacement axle on my '92 245, which originally came with limited slip
    (which broke).
