my '99 V70XC has around 73k miles on it, and it feels like the factory
shocks that came with the car might be wearing out -- either that or
i'm more sensitive to the bumps in the road than i used to be.

either way, i've been thinking about getting a new set of shocks. when
i go to www.ipdusa.com and look, i see a range of options, some of
which appear to not be compatible with AWD volvos (e.g., the
bilsteins). i have no clue as to the relative merits of the differernt
options, or if in fact i might be just as well served with a
    lower-priced option.

any opinions or information would be much appreciated.

  2. Your shocks are self-leveling Nivomats at all four corners. They are very
expensive almost a grand each. They should last longer than 73k. They may
feel sloppy to you but that is the nature of these self-leveling shocks. You
can't slap any other kind of shock on there unless you want to replace the
springs also. Then the cost starts going up again.
