S60?

I'm the owner of a 2001 S60 2.4T, just about to go off warranty. I've
decided to take my chances in the crap shoot, and NOT buy an extended
warranty. Part of my rationale is (a) Volvo wants about $2,200 for the
warranty, which means, I figure, they'll make money on it at that price; so,
statistically, on average, the cost of maintenance beyond routine stuff
should be less than that; and (b) although I just may be missing it, I don't
see much talk here about the S60, besides the predictable 240 lover who
thinks that was the last good car Volvo made, and says anything newer
stinks. Anyway, not much talk = a good sign.

But, am I wrong? Is this group composed mostly of old Volvo (that is, Volvos
as old as 240s, and older, mostly) fans, so the reason I don't see much
mention of the S60 is that few people here have them?

I posted similar question earlier this year and received comforting
replies... decided not to go for the warranty because of rationale (a).

repairs since!!!)

I went for the Volvo extended at the last moment of our 98 V70XC's
normal warranty. I was primarily concerned at some transmission issues
that were never good enough to show up when a Dealer person was driving.

Aside from the above, a new ABS module was required at a total cost of
under US$600 at a point not far beyond the expiration of the normal
coverage. It was fully covered, but was the extended coverage worth the
~US$2,600 cost? Seems not. Of course there is the matter of "peace of
mind" . . .

The newer 02 S60AWD will likely not get the extended cover.

What sort of mileage do you have on it?

There is a major issue with the fly by wire throttle system on 99+ Volvos
which is costly to fix. Search www.brickboard.com for details.

If you want to take the chance then go for it. I have never bought
warranties (generally not worth the paper they're written on in my view) and
have yet to strike major issues (apart from the throttle problem above)....
On balance I think I'm probably ahead....
 
As stated in the original message, just about off warranty, hence, 49,000+,
nearing 50K.

We've already had a fly-by-wire replacement, including send unit and
throttle body.

Basically the car's running great. Now.

Hi Hal,

When did you have the FBW modules replaced? Now double that distance and
thats when you could be looking at another replacement..... Now decide how
much that warranty is worth. As I said before, I never take them out and am
so far ahead of the game but at the end of the day it is your decision. All
I can do is show you the other side of the coin.

Just checked my records (I'm anal and record everything in a database). We
had the FBW modules replaced at 22,053. So we've passed the magical 44,106
mark without incident.

22k! That was early!!!

Only heard of one earlier than that and that was 17k.....

Usually they seem to let go at around 60-70k (so it seems from feedback on
http://www.brickboard.com ) so that would theoretically make yours 80-90k
miles or so if the law of averages applies to the new module.... At around
$1100 per time how much is that warranty? And does it include the Throttle
Control Module (specifically)? How many miles do you do per annum and how
long do you figure on keeping the car? That should simplify the math as to
whether the warranty is worth having.
