When these start to whine (and loudly) what kind of life, (generally)
do they still have in them?

Only whines for a minute or so when I first start cold engine.

Do the check valves "usually" cause the problem?

Also, what happens when the motor fails? check engine and a
    code?...any driving problems?

    THANKS VERY MUCH.

If you take the thing apart and clean the mud / water / crap out of the
motor and bearings now and re grease it, then it will usually live on for
    several years yet.

The one way valve sticking open and allowing water vapour from the exhaust
is what causes it, so replace them at the same time.

If the air pump fails / seizes etc then this will bring on the check engine
    lamp.
