My 2000 2.9L S80 is due for a new timing belt and I plan to replace it
myself. Is there anything special about this job I need to know? Any
special tools required? I've found sites that document changing the
timing belts on other Volvo models, but not the S80 and I have to
wonder why. I'm a decent back-yard mechanic, but I've never worked on
a Volvo yet. I plan to replace the timing belt, idler/tensioners as
well as the water pump, hoses and serpentine belt. Any advice or
    feelback would be welcome.

It seems a Haynes Manual for your S80 will solve your problem.

  3. If it's the same as the 5-cylinder engines then there's a 30mm nut on
the end of the crank that's damn tight. You'll need to make something to
stop the crank turning as you undo this. Haynes manual suggests a
Y-shaped homemade tool, made out of steel flat bar, that you bolt to the
serpentine belt pulley. Oh and the timing marks are mere dimples so some
white paint may be useful. This is all assuming it's the same as the
    5-cylinder engines.

YES, A Haynes manual would solve my problems --too bad they don't make
    one!
I'd love to find a repair manual for the S80. I've tried Clymer,
Haynes and every other vendor I could think of --nothing.
So that's why I thought I'd ask the Volvo comunity for information on
changing my timing belt --but no luck here either.

I have not changed the timing belt on my '99 S-70.

But I have changed the timing belt on my '74 J-H.

You have to make absolutely sure that the cam shafts do not change
position. I used several zip lock ties to hold every thing in position.

On my S-70 engine, a transverse 5 cylinder, there is not much room to
    change the belt.

The dealer charged about $280 to change it last time, so I am going to
let the dealer do it this time.

  6. yea, everyone needs to think about what their time is worth, per
    hour...
it would take me hours to chase around 1/2 of the small issues i get
w/my high mileage s80t6.....not to mention i probabally wouldn't get
    it right the 1st time.....i tinker w/the 1993 940t, but not the 00
    s80...
