stumbling 1987 740 GLE

Discussion in 'Volvo 740' started by Andrew McCune, Oct 30, 2003.

  1. My recently-purchased '87 740 GLE (automatic transmission) with just over
200,000 miles (321,868 km) has an odd and intermittent problem. Under
low-speed acceleration, the engine will sometimes begin to stumble,
exhibiting fuel-starvation or no-spark symptoms. On one occasion, the
engine died completely. When it did so, turning the key would not crank the
engine at all (this actually happened on the way home after I bought it).
After a few minutes of trying to find the hazard light switch, I turned the
key and the engine started just fine. Anyone have ideas as to where I
should start? I have a Haynes manual on the way, but I'm pretty familiar
with automobiles as it is. I was thinking perhaps main relay or fuel
filter/pump. Thanks so much in advance for your help.

Try replacing the fuel pump relay and the fuel filter. You probably panicked and
tried to restart the car in a gear instead of Park or Neutral, or your starter
    inhibitor switch is playing up.

    Cheers, Peter.
