I have to post this. I'm not an owner, shareholder or employed by this
mechanic. I simply go along, as a fairly non-mechanically minded person
and trust them to do a good and honest job - and they do.
The Bridge Motor Company, Withington, Manchester
are a fairly small, privately owned mechanics who service any car
that's taken to them. I've been going along to them for nearly eight
years after being tipped off by my landlady. In that time I've owned a
340, 240, 740 and now a 940 all of which have been put right, repaired,
serviced and MOT'ed regularly by them.
But the reason for this posting is my current experience of them. I
took my J-reg 940 estate along to them a few weeks ago with this
problem:
http://groups.google.co.uk/group/al...0def020a2?q=940+stall&rnum=1#dd34ef50def020a2
After spending a whole day testing every component that the error
messages suggested might be at fault, they explained to me that they
had failed to find the problem and so didn't feel able to justify
charging me anything more than a token hour's worth of labour. It was
frustrating to be told that the problem had escaped them and awful to
think that I needed to await an inevitable roadside encounter when the
problem managed to develop itself enough to be identifiable. So I've
only been driving locally and have continued to search this and other
groups. I thought I'd finally hit on something and posted this:

Today, the car went in for the in-tank fuel pump to be replaced. I got
a call mid-morning to tell me that they'd discovered the wiring for the
in-tank fuel pump was disconnected, had hooked it back up and found
that the problem was no more! So no in-tank fuel pump needing to be
replaced. Furthermore, having discovered the disconnected wiring when
prepping for the job, they refused to be paid anything as they said
they'd not done any work to charge for.
I am astonished! I can't imagine any other mechanics being so honest
and decent. Surely many mechanics would have done the job anyway and
others would have charged without even doing it. The least I expected
in this scenario was a rather annoyed mechanic making at least an
hour's labour charge having been messed about by me. But nothing of the
sort.
My wife collected the car and they were courteous and polite. I just
can't say enough to commend them to every reader of this group.
