time belt replacement and what else?

My V70 is due for a 70K-mile timing belt replacement, and the garage
suggested that at the same time replace the water pump, since the timing
belt replacement will involve getting to the water pump anyway.

I have yet to check out the incremental cost.....

What's the word of wisdom? Anything else that should be done at the same
time?

thanks.

Well, the owner's manual that came with my 240 had a pretty detailed
maintenance schedule. I've not seen the current Volvo owner's
manuals, but I would think that there's be soem sort of guide.

FWIW, when I had some work done last winter on my 240 at the Vovlo
dealership in White Bear Lake MN, I inquired about the 100,000 mile
service. They quoted me a price of $1000 and almost NONE of the items
on the owner's manual 100,000 mile service checklist were included for
that $1000. They basically charge $1000 for a glorified car wash,
vacuuming, gas treatment and oil change. Sheesh. I won't be going
back to the Volvo dealer anytime oon.

Sounds like a good idea. Broken waterpump can get nasty, so its better
to do it before it breaks than after. And they always break... :-)
Other things to replace:
* The auxillary belt (the one that drives the waterpump and AC).
* Transmission oil and brake oil perhaps?
* Pollen filter, Air filter, Flame guard?
Check with your mechanic.

Change coolant every two years after the new waterpump is installed.
Use the C3 Volvo stuff. Actually Volvo has no service interval for
coolant, but thats silly and leads to a broken cooling system faster
than neccesary. Everey two years you should change it IMHO.
