Timing Belt on V70

Discussion in 'Volvo V70' started by Peter \(Remove one i and theRemove\), Jan 9, 2006.

  1. I have a '98 V70 that needs to have the timing belt replaced. I have two
    questions-
    1. Does it need the tension pulley replaced ?
    2. Is this a job that my local gas station mechanic can do?

    Thanks in advance!

doesn't cost so much more. they weren't going to do mine but then it
came apart when they were putting the new belt on!

IMHO, yes, i would, without question
maybe yours but not mine or on my 98 v70XC. they work on the old truck
from my condo association and do service for the krispe kreme dobnut
trucks but i hardly ever see a volvo there. I don't even want my local
(across the stree, 1/2 block up) station to do a safety check on my
volvo. not that i am biased on them.

The White block engines are not as straight forward as are some engines, not
requiring special tools, but requiring more skill, patience and time than
    some others.

There is far greater risk of cocking the job up without realising it.

I would recommend you ask someone who is of alittle higher calibre than a
'gas station mechanic'- no offence to him.

I would severely recommend botht he tensioner roller, and guide roller to be
changed, along with the water pump and gasket when the t'belt is changed.
And possibly the aux belt too.

    Yes, always replace tension rollers.
At 2nd change of timing belt 240000km, I changed the water pump.
The job is not complicated but need some experience. A bad work could have
    serious
    damage as result.

Ditto. BTW the 98 motor is exactly the same as the earlier 850's as far
    as changing the T/belt.

  6. Apart from the 98 motor will have a manual spring loaded tensioner rather
than the earlier hydraulic one. (or should have) It cannot be emphasised
enough how vital it is not to rush re-compressing the hydraulic tensioner on
the earlier engines- allow AT LEAST 20mins in a bench vice, a tiny bit at a
    time.
