Time to change the belt! I do a lot of the repairs myself, but where it
concerns life or death of the engine, I choose the pro's. I first called the
Volvo dealership (to get a price to go after), and they were very friendly
and informed me of the last time the vehicle was in for service with them.
They also said there should be a sticker on the housing that protects the
belt. They gave me a price.

I called five other repair shops in Uppsala, Sweden - and guess what: Volvo
had the best price, and was the most professional and informative shop I
    spoke with over the phone.

I was surprised, I was expecting them to be the most expensive. The other
shops were not rinky-dink "Jim's Garage & Chicken Feed" places.

FYI: For a 1993 460 GL 2.0 it will cost 1900SEK which is around $280. The
most expensive shop wanted $400... and they probably don't even use Volvo
    parts.

I have a '92 940TD (lovely car). My local (UK) Volvo dealer wanted
£520 to change the timing belt. That's US$998 at today's exchange rate!
Just another example of Ripoff Britain.
Bought a Chilton Manual and did it myself.

Don't you need some special tools to do it on a Diesel? I know on the old VW
Diesel engines used in the 200/700 series cars you have to have a dial
caliper and a special adapter so you get the fuel injection timing correct.
Also the valve timing is much more critical on a Diesel engine.
