    Hello folks,

I am new to this group (i have always driven alfa romeo, peugeot and toyota)
but last week my 2003 Toyota Avensis Verso was stolen. I have just made the
decision to buy a volvo v50 2.0D Elan. Any other members of the group that
bought the v50. And what do you think of my decision? I also considered a
V70 2,4 170 hp (costs 7,500 euro more but has leather, head light wipers,
rain sensor, fog ligths and is of course bigger). Anyone?

  2. The V50 won't be available in the USA until later this summer. The
media have given it good reviews.

I would not pay for leather or fog lights. Volvo headlights are good and
aren't improved with fog lights. The Volvo cloth seats are better than
the leather seats. The winter package with headlight wipers is good and
worthwhile. More recent V70 have proved to be good, reliable vehicles.

Leather is easier to keep clean tho, which is a bonus if he has any kids...
or messy friends (at least with these you can tell to take their own car)...

I have had a toyota landcruiser with leather and I loved the leather (and
the car too btw, but a little bit too expensive)! I have 2 young kids
indeed, and leather is much easier to clean. The volvo v70 edition II
mentioned in my 1st message (that was my alternative for the V50) had half
leather, so the advantage is not too big. Any opinions on my decision buying
the 2.0 D engine instead of the 170 hp petrol engine for the v50? In the
Netherlands they cost the same (about 32.000 euro, which is by the way $
    40,000)

How much cheaper is Diesel, and can you live with the performance difference
of the diesel (if any). I've got a diesel Golf (90hp) and it's not overly
different from the gas version (115hp) until you really wind up both
engines... I'd pick the diesel between the two for myself, I like diesel
fuel economy, and the boatloads of torque, as well as the robust engine
    construction.

I will point out that I only have experience with a 6 cylinder gas Volvo
(965)... My diesel experience is with the VW TDI engine.... which is quite
an enjoyable motor, and I hear that european diesels are much nicer.

The prices of the petrol and diesel are equal, but the montly taxes on the
diesel are about double. The diesel had 136 hp and the petrol 170 but the
diesel has far more torque than the petrol engine. that's why i want to buy
the diesel. In europe, about 50-60% of all new sold cars are diesels,
because those diesel engines are better than petrol engines nowadays.

The V50 isn't out yet............! It's announced, but you can't buy
it yet. The 2.0D has a very nice and powerful 136 PK engine and lots
    of low-end torque.

    Regards,

In the Netherlands (Europe) you can order a V50 already (prices are also
    announced).

Personally I like diesels, even tho we only get the lowest powered of the VW
Diesels over here in Canada... Tho we are getting their massive V10 TDI
engine soon (for their equally large Touareg).

I wish we had the V70 D5 here... it would definately be the car I would
    want.
