2004 T5m

I had thought that the 2004 was the last year of the T5 manual...
since then, have discovered that there were 2005 T5s with 6 speed
manual transmissions.

Any idea how common the 2005 T5s were - with the 6speeds? Worth
trying to find one for sale, or are they too limited in number to
search?

Local dealer said 2005 was a better year (different electronics,
better seats, slightly more hp), but that he had never seen a 6 speed
(other than the R model).

Thanks

Do you *really* want 6 gears?

I've got a 6-speed manual box on my 2007 V70 D5, but don't really see the
advantage compared with 5-speeds. On my previous car, 5 gears covered the
range quite adequately, and 6 just seems to increase the chances of being in
the *wrong* gear at any point in time!

Indeed. I heard an advertisement for a Mercedes model wih a very
high output engine and 7 speed automatic transmission. Seven speeds!
One of it's "features" is the ability to have it automatically skip 3
intermediate to allow for "smoother" shifting. I read that to mean it
would reduce what would seem like continual hunting around for the
proper gear. I would think that an engine that powerful could
function very well with a torque converter based 3 or 4 speed
automatic.

Don't know what part of the country/world you're in but... A 2005
V50/T5 manual turned up in San Antonio, Texas back in August but I think
it was a 5-speed. It was sold pretty much before I could get in my Ford
beater and get there to check it out...

Actually, was looking for a V70 T manual --- found and bought a '04
V70 thinking it was the last year. It has only 29k miles, and is a
pretty fresh car.

But then saw a reveiw of a 2005 V70 T5 with a 6 speed. But have never
seen one for sale (and I've looked).

I know of the SA TX dealer, good folks. But like most, consider the
manual trans cars 'special orders' ... keep very few around.

Spoke to a Volvo dealer mechanics, and he was unaware of a 6 speed
T5 in 2005, but said the '05 had better electrics, better seats, and a
few more HP.

I've heard of an R with a 6 speed but not a T5. Must be an unusual
car.

When I was car shopping most of the dealers seemed to think there is no
market for manual trans vehicles so the dealers don't stock them.
Conversations with my friends (most of whom are +/- 10 years of my age)
suggests that a lot of drivers are convinced manual trans is to be
avoided - after all, the dealers don't stock them routinely so something
MUST be bad about a manual trans, right?

Before my ideal new-to-me V70/2.4T turned up at sale I was giving
serious consideration to a late-model 5-speed Subaru wagon, to the
horror and dismay of Husband. I don't know what horrified him more -
the idea of an assembled-in-Indiana "Japanese" car sitting in the
driveway, or the manual transmission :D

Wooly "How Much Faster Will It Go without the Governor?" Grrl

Yeah Roadie --- hope to find one...here are references I've found

On the Road

The V70 T5's engine generates plenty of horsepower (257) and plenty of
torque (258 lb-ft of torque) but where it really makes a difference is
where and when that power is available. Most of this engine's power is
available in the normal driving that we all do: starting from 1,800
rpm. But there's a drawback to that, too: torque steer. Torque steer
happens when a car pulls sharply to the right during hard
acceleration. This sometimes happens with over-powered FWD cars. I
like the T5's power but I really don't like its full on/off type
delivery. You floor it and you wait; then all hell breaks loose. I
sure wouldn't want to forget I'd ordered the T5 engine if I were on an
icy road.

While the 6-speed manual in this car was great fun to play with, I
think the 5-speed auto would be the sounder choice with the T5 engine.

My Volvo V70 T5 tester had the optional electronic control suspension
system, which actively adjusts shock damping in relation to driver and
vehicle input. There are two driver-initiated settings - comfort and
sport. I found the ride a bit hard even on the comfort setting. But
the V70 is smooth and quiet so it certainly makes a great highway car.
I also thought the fuel economy was reasonable at 19 city/26 highway.

Volvo V70 Volvo V70 2005

For 2005, the Volvo V70 receives several changes. The T5 receives a
performance boost, getting a 2.4-litre turbocharged engine that
replaces the 2.3 of 2004, which gives it an additional 10 horsepower
and 15 lb-ft of torque. It also receives a new turbocharger derived
from the high-performance R model, variable intake valve timing, an
optional six-speed manual transmission, new electronic controls on the
Geartronic-equipped five-speed automatic for faster gear changes, and
larger brake discs.

The T5 houses a 257 horsepower version of the turbocharged 2.4 liter
inline five engine, and buyers once again may choose between a manual
or automatic transmission. The manual has been upgraded to a
six-speed unit here. An anti-skid system and sport suspension also
come standard.
