Hi i have an old volvo 740 tic 88
that really runs fine, but a couple of days ago my girlfriend used the
car and it suddenly stops,it just died. The starter runs but the engine
wont ignite.if u wait an hour or so then there is no problems to start
it mostly.I have checked the sparkplugs and the rest of the ignition
parts but i cant see anything wrong, the same with the fuses they are
    all fine,any suggestions?

The 740 and 240 have nearly identical drivetrains.
Locations of some items could be different - however I expect that you
have the same two fuel pumps as the 240.

    To quote from "1986 240 DL - Won't start"
    (posted today, 7:49 a.m.)

If engine turns over but does not catch, then you must have a fuel or
    spark problem.
    Easily fixed versions of these:
    1) Bad ingition system fuse (0r bad contact in the fuse/holder). It's a
white plastic holder, about 1 foot rear of the battery, on the fender
    wall (on the 240). Handle with care as it has two positive wire leads;
either will ground to anything if they come loose.
    2) Fuel pump relay kicked loose from its wire plug-in. In the 240, it
islocated in front of front passenter's right foot, on the firewall. An
angry passenger kicked mine loose a couple times. Or the relay could be
    dead.
Other trouble sources: bad computer, bad in-tank or out-of-tank fuel
pump (you have one of each). All these are jobs for a knowledgable shop
and will cost some good money.

Try the ignition amplifier, behind the battery on the inner wheel arch. Not
guaranteeing it but we had a similar problem and this was the fix.

  4. My experience was the same, but it was one of the pull out connectors behind
    the fuse box.
I bought one from a broker for two pound no problem after.

Look at the problem only being why wont the car start when warm, no trouble
when cold, forget the girlfriend bit.
