I just learned something interesting while having my bi-yearly emissions
test. Now they test the vehicle's fuel cap for leakage of fumes (hydrocarbons).

Naturally, my '95 940 failed this test. I was obliged to purchase a new
after-market cap while they threw the old one away. They told me that
Volvos in particular, even the newer ones have a problem with the OEM
caps. They said that they seem to be very fragile, and once you drop it,
you break something inside having to do with the vent system, I guess.

Has anyone heard of this? They have a special test tool that fits onto
the cap that measures the leakage.

hi , My 1989 780 failed N.J. emission testing because of the gas cap, the
machine pressurize the system and if it doesn't hold they fail you. Gary

We've had that test here as part of our emissions testing since it was
introduced in 1998. My cars have always passed even my 1983 and 1984
240s.

Here in New York you pass emissions on a 240 series car as long as you
do not have a rag for a gas cap! (-;
