volvo no go

I have an 87 Volvo GL. There is gas in the tank, but it is low. The
other day I went to start it up and the second I took my foot off of
the gas, it died. I put engine treatment in, but still nothing unless
I floor the accelerator. Even then, the engine is missing, some smoke
comes out of the exhaust and it diesels as well. I checked the
distributor cap and cleaned the contacts but haven't done anything
else.

Any suggestions?

First thing: find out if it is an ignition or fuel problem.

Hook up a timing light and see if it flashes like it should.
