    Who makes the diesel engine for these also is there anything to look out for
    when buying second-hand

    Find one with at least the "Europe" package (includes electric windows,
    half-leather, airco etc etc)
    Often the ash-tray is broken in a second hand V40; try it out by pushing it.
    Also the fase 1 often has scales; the blanc laquer peels, on the center
    dashboard.
    The drivers armsupport is standard a bit weak. After a couple of years it
    will break off when leaning a bit to hard on it. The repair set is a quite a
    bit stronger version than the original.
    I had the engine checked by my garage, since I'm not into engines.

    For the rest: great car!
    Drive one myself and have been looking for one for approx 5 months before I
    found the one I'm driving now

    Regarding the diesel engine; I think fase 1 was supplied by renault.
    From fase 2 they were Volvo's own make.
    Not sure about the above though. Maybe someone can give better details on
    this.
