recently I had a problem with my indicator lights under my instruments staying on once the car started rather than shutting off after a few seconds. all the things I read said alternator not charging battery, other said battery was not taking a charge. replaced alternator didn't work took the original alternator down to the parts store. had it checked everything checked out okay. but what I found was the charging voltage was 13.8 volt which was good, that was on the big post. however the volume down the small post was only 11.6 volt which I found to be the post that controls the voltage on the dash that voltage being low was not letting the relay or whatever turns the warning lights out not receiving the proper voltage. found this out purely by accident so for FYI anyone having problems with indicator lights not going out after the car is started the Volvo 740 s check the voltage on the small terminal on the alternator
