So Im approaching 90k miles on this 1994 850 NA and I've been reading that
prices generally cost about $1200.00 to perform the 90k service.

This seems ridiculous to me, so what are you paying at the dealer for this
service, or elsewhere?

Thanks

90K service runs usually about $600.00 the service is usually charged out @
3.50 Hrs Labor @ whatever the labor rate is
EX $91.00 X 3.50 =$318.50 Then figure all the parts in Engine oil & Oil
filter Sparkplugs Fuel & Air filter Pollen Filter & you come pretty close to
the $600.00 you have to shop around to see what your local Volvo dealer
charges & what your local Volvo specialist charges & make a choice of who
will repair your Volvo

I calculated it to be about 4 hours of labor, and my local dealer charges
$650 for this service, parts included. The work they do is: a) replace
spark plugs, b) new air filter, c) new brake fluid d) lubricate belt
tensioners e) lubricate all hinges f) clean antenna g) new pollen filter
i) oil and oil filter j) clean flame guard k) rotate tyres

$650 is quite a good deal I think - Fields Volvo in Chicago.

Hmmm, seeing as I contract to work for a large auto dealer conglomerate
(owns over 150+ dealers across the U.S.), and one of them is a Volvo dealer
down the street from my office at their Honda store, I think I'll pop by on
monday and talk with the service manager and see what he can do the 90k
service for on my vehicle.

I do know that these 3.5 and 4.0 hour times are what is charged, but not
what it takes to do the job, the job actualy takes a little over an hour to
do.

At our honda store, the 60k service books at like 3.5, but these guys all do
it in less than an hour for the more experienced and those that want to make
as much money as they can per day, and about 2 hours for those less
experienced and less motivated.

Thanks all for the info.

What you are paying for is the book time assigned to perform this repair
usually in most shops is the technician who has the most experience performs
most of these services wither he performs the job in 2 hours or the 3.50
hours you still get charged the book time that is just the way most repair
shops work wither it is the dealer or a local Volvo repair shop the only
difference will be the hourly labor rate charged by the different shops

Thanks, I realize that, its the same way it works in the Honda store that I
have an office setup in. I was just commenting that I will ask the service
manager what he can give it to me for. Since this particular service
manager started out as a floor sweeper, and worked his way up to service
manager back when my parents owned the dealership, so he should probably
give me a break on the price. Hell... He could give it to me at internal
rates and not lose anything, but i'll have to see what he can do tommorrow
to be sure.

If he can't meet my local garage, then I'll just go to my garage and watch
over them that they do it explicitly by the book and put everything back as
it was before they laid a hand on it, which they have been known to
"quicktie" some of the wires in my Jeep until I stood over them and made
sure they did it right.

Thanks again for the replies.

That is a rediculous amount of money! I had my 96K KM service done at Volvo
of Durham and it cost me just over $700 CDN. That included:

Timing belt replacement
Oil and filter change
Pollen filter change
Tire rotation
Transmission fluch and fill
Various diagnostics run
And all 5 spark plugs replaced because one had caused a fault in the OBDII

$700 CDN translates to about $500 US so I think you shop around a bit. Does
the 90K Miles service do anything more than the above?

Interesting. My Volvo dealer will not do a transmission flush on
a 850 or an S70. They will add more fluid, though.

My dealer says they still flush the trannies on the newer cars, feels they
last longer that way.

I generally think that is a good practice.

Okay, well I went into Volvo of Santa Monica, and the service advisor gave
me their latest coupon, it lists the 90k for 5 cyl models at $355.00 and 4
cyl at 385.00 So Im going to take it in next week and have it done there
since that seems a good price. As far as the T belt is concerned, I dont
think thats part of the package price of this dealer, but mine was done 700
miles ago by the previous owner anyway.

My recent 90k service cost £330 (so around $600), this figure included a
couple of extras that needed doing, namely thermostat and top engine mount,
this was at a main dealer.
