2002 V40 auto 5 speed, Yesterday it was not wanting to release from
Park, today I cant get it to go out of park. Im sure its a simple fix
but it is in a garage and I can not access much. Any ideas before I
have to tow it. Not a good day to have no car. Foot is on brake, I
tried rocking it, is this common.

How do I remove the cover, it looks like the cover around the shift
lever is snapped on, it all looks snapped on except for one screw I
saw on the carpet, but it is 20f in the garage and cold makes plastic
brittle. It also says it could be the brake light switch, is that
easier to find and test. What happens is the knob on the shifter wont
release, so its stuck in park. Thanks again.

Maybe this is a stupid question, but did you try to press the Shift
Release button on the console in front of the Shifter? ignition has to
be on.....

At some point I couldn't turn the Ignitionlock off and remove the key,
it was the Shift Release button that was partially stuck - I prised it
upwards using a small screwdriver and it's been okay since.

The only button I have ever pushed is on the shifter itself, I only
have a "W" button on the right which starts you in second gear for
ice. I wish there were screws on the consul I am afraid I will break
things prying them loose without a manual.

Check you manual for shiftlock release (override). Your car has such a
button. If you don't have the manual, look at the one that volvo puts
on line:

http://new.volvocars.com/ownersdocs/2002/2002_SV40/02sv40_00.htm

On page 99 of your cars users manual the directions for the shiftlock
override state:

Shiftlock release

The gear selector is locked in the (P)ark position. To manually release
the shiftlock:

· Turn the starting (ignition) key to position I

· Press firmly on the "SHIFTLOCK OVERRIDE" button located at the base of
the gear selector

· While holding the override button down, press the button on the front
of the gear selector

· Move the selector from the (P)ark position.

The graphic is at:

When in doubt, always read the direction before operating. A surgeon
told me that once.

Thanks, I saw the button and it did nothing while depressing it
earlier, it is very small. I have a manual but did not realise until I
saw your posted photo of the screwdriver that the screwdriver is
needed to depress it about 1/4" as my finger is to big. Well now it
has real theft deterrentcy, I can even leave the motor running at the
highest crime areas at a gas station and nobody will figure it out!
Another postitive note its to icy here in Chicago to walk anywhere, a
big ice storm last night, so without a cigarette for a day I should
stay that way. Thanks.
