240 auto manual conversion

Hi.. I'm keen to swap the auto out of an 88 240 and replace with manual. Are there any threads (with pics) that someone can steer me to so I can follow the process. I am aware of the differences between the M46 & M47 re electric O/D vs straight 5 spd but is one better / stronger than the other or generally more preferred? I've also read that synchros in the 240's aren't strong. It this true & if so are parts available? Thanks
