Our 1991 240 DL has recently started whining with a high pitch that
increases with speed. It is a 5 speed and the sound is present in all
gears. I hear it especially in the front seat. The car has 189,000
miles on it. Our mechanic has mentioned that it will need a clutch
soon, but it does not appear to be slipping, and the car accelerates
    as it has been.

    What does this "sound" like?

    Thanks,

    Vinnie

I'd start by checking the center support bearing on the driveshaft, if this
is ok it wouldn't hurt to replace the transmission fluid with Redline MTL,
this would be easier to do when the tranny is out to do the clutch though.
185k seems a little soon for that, but if the mechanic has adjusted the
cable near it's limit then it's probably fairly well worn.
