'93 850 GLT Engine quitting

Discussion in 'Volvo 850' started by L A Davenport, Dec 3, 2004.

  1. I have a new to me 93 850 GLT 5-speed and sometimes the engine will just cut
out. No warning, no chugging, just off. After a minute or so, it will
start again. I've found no pattern to when it's happening, sometimes once
in 800 miles, then 5 times in one day. Always restarts after a bit.

What say you about this? No chugging makes me suspect electrical rather
than fuel, but I could use a suggestion as to where to start. Is this
car/engine known for a fault like this?

    Thanks.

  2. My '93 had a similar problem several years ago. I found there was no power
getting to the fuel pump. After a lot of research I found there is a fuel
pump relay located in the fuse box (the one located just forward of the
firewall, in front of the driver) that is behind the two rows of fuses. It
was kind of difficult to get out, but the replacement definitely solved the
problem. Check this possibility out. I have replaced various relays in my
Volvos over the years. They can fail.

    Best of luck to you.
