We had brake rotors on a 2007 XC whose braking surface disintegrated (flaked off leaving rough metal exposed) at under 40K miles with pads no more than half worn (mostly interstate driving with conservative braking). This very nearly cost us our lives when I braked hard for an unfamiliar stop sign in another state and the car went through intersection at about 20 mph. Has anyone else experienced early deterioration of the braking surfaces or replaced rotors on the dealer's recommendation when the original set of pads was replaced?
