How much are 960's worth now?

    Hello

(all funds below are listed in Canadian dollars, exchange is around 0.71
    USD)

....well, it happened... I knew it would only be a matter of time... yes,
that's right, my dad took the 960 to the local Volvo dealer for something,
and started looking at the shinny new ones. He was completely in awe of the
Titanium edition V70 2.5T, it was a very nice car... Personaly I would go
the AWD with premium package and a few optional bolt ons... or the R ;-)
Anyhow, he asked how much our car would be on a trade in, the guy said maybe
5-6000, he would have to see it to give us a final number. My dad of course
was reduced to near tears by the fact that his lovely nearly mint condition,
low KMs 960 would barely cover the taxes on a new car (or not even). He
thinks he could get around 10000+ if he sold privately, I told him no one
would give him more then around 8000-8500 for it (after looking at auto
    trader).

    1993 960 wagon - smoke silver metallic
    cold weather package
all the goodies normal included in the 960... leather, dual power seats with
memory, power all, 6 speaker AM/FM (FM not working, I still have to fix
it)/Cassette, ECC (ice cold air), load leveling, plus a Volvo tow hitch
with wiring. Includes 4 snow tires on steel rims as well.

137 K Kms, all the service records, Volvo serviced every time, except for a
few oil changes. Minor accident damage to the right rear quarter panel,
panel was replaced... you can't tell anything was touched. The paint is in
excellent condition everywhere, a few dings and stone chips associated with
age of course... car has been garaged when not in use. Interior is
immaculate, front driver seat leather is more worn then anywhere else, of
course... but still quite nice, no cracks.

    So who is right?
    Dealer $5000-6000
    Me $8000ish
My father $10000+ (he says the car is still worth all the money he payed for
    it)

PS... we aren't thinking of actually selling it, he is just now extremely
curious, and demanded I post this in the newsgroup for him.

....on a personal note, I will most likely be buying this car off him in 4
years, when he finally buys a new car... most likely a V70, or whatever is
new at the time... unless it is too Ford based (he won't get it if there is
a Ford engine in there)... How well do you think a 960 will hold up for ohhh
another 10 years from now?... Do you think they are capable of doing a 20
year stint, I would like to keep it till it turns 20, by then I should have
enough money to get a NEW car for a change...... hey at least I am moving up
from used VW's :), just taking a throwback in time to get the Volvo (91
Golf, 99 Golf TDI.... 4 years from now the 93 960...hopefully)

here in houston we bought a 92 960 mint condition, had 192,000 miles but
perfect, for a little under 4000.00 with tt&l ,fully loaded, good car ,but keep
an eye on the plastic radiator, the top radiator hose outlet can break without
warning, luckily it happened in the driveway, there was a posting on brickbourd,
these radiators have a life of about ten years, and of couse the power seats
with a mind of there own, had to disconect power recliner, kept going all the
way back on its own.then theres the steering rack noise, tempermental climate
control. jerky transmission, all inherent problems in these early models.if you
really want a 960 find the newest one you can with the lowest miles, and pay a
little more. these early ones are kinda rare, i wonder why? mark

...... We already have the car (owned since new), we just want to know what
it is worth.... turns out a base model 240 would have goten us more
    money.... :-(

I guess people were afraid of the problems and drove the prices down/

Here (in Chicago), if your car is in excellent condition, and has
about 86,000 miles, you could expect about $5000 - $6000 for a private
party sale (this is US dollars). For dealer trade-in, about $1000 less.

1 US dollar is about a $1.40 Canadian, so I would say that you're correct.
    Private party sale: $7000 - $8500

I agree with you completely... the 240 was too good, I mean they brag about
how Volvo's are doing 1 million KMs in their brocheurs, but these people
driving these things just aren't buying a brand new S60, or a V70 to replace
that 85' Turbo that won't quit, or that 79 DL whos electric OD just hasn't
    given up ;-).

He plans to keep the 960 for 4 more years, buy a brand new V70 (or
equivilant, or switch brands if Volvo is crap by then... ie if there is too
much Ford in them)... You can guess who gets to inherit the 960 for a
nominal sum.... I won't be complaining.

  6. In Dallas I've noticed that the 240 and 740 models are demanding a premium
only if they are in pristine condition both mechanically and cosmetically.
Otherwise they are both $1500 cars.... Seems that people are still willing
to pay top dollar for a creampuff regardless of age.

740's are nearly worthless around here (for how good they are)... 940s on
the other hand seem to be doing well. 240's used to get good prices, but are
now deemed too old I guess... Canadian winters have rusted out many of them
as well, the 740's do better in that respect. Late model 240's can still
hold their value, but older then a 90 or a 91 is very low in price.

Condition does seem to have a lot to do with used Volvo prices.

My '96 850 has a trade in value of around US$2500 and a retail of around
US$5000. I suspect that your dealer is about right.

The 240 series is holding it's value extremely well, newer model Volvos seem
to have a much steeper depreciation curve than did the 240. I think this is
because Volvo has been introducing new models and new model names much more
frequently now than they did pre 1995.
