Does anyone know more about this? Is it based on a Ford block, the Jaguar
block, or something else?

Curious mind wants to know :).

This from http://www.thecarconnection.com/index.asp?article=7501 :

"A V-8 for Volvo
Volvo will present its first vehicle with a V-8 engine. The XC90 will get
such a powerplant to be able to keep up with the competition in North
America. The 4.4-liter V-8 has 315 hp and will be teamed to a six-speed
automatic transmission. Volvo says that this engine is the first V-8 that
meets the Euro V emission standard. The XC90 V-8 will be able to sprint from
0-60 in less than 7 seconds. Volvo hopes to sell 15,000 XC90 V-8s worldwide.
New is the electronic AWD drive system and its Instant Traction, a new
technology that Volvo will introduce as a world first. The AWD system has
also been upgraded to handle the power of the V-8. Maximum short-term torque
at the rear wheel has been increased by 50 percent."

"*-344-*Never Forgotten"
Is for the New York City Firemen who lost their lives on September 11,2001.
The official count is 343, but there was also a volunteer who lost his life
aiding in the initial rescue efforts. And I will never forget them as long
as I live,
nor should any American.

It appears to be a totally new block design.

It is being developed by Yamaha.

Interesting. Ford and Yamaha have a long background. Yamaha designed and
built the high output V-6 DOHC engine for the old Taurus SHO. I wonder
where else in Ford's stable this design is destined to reside. It does not
seem like Volvo's production levels justify a dedicated V-8 FWD/AWD engine.
The Jaguar V-8 is now being used in some Ford US products (Lincoln LS) and
by Land Rover.

In general Ford does not seem to be as effective at leveraging it's engine
designs across multiple brands as do it's major competitors.

I also wonder if the 6 speed automatic transmission announced to go with the
V-8 is a version of the GM/Ford joint design. Here are two articles about
that project:

I'd guess it's going into the Five-Hundred/Montego to compete with the 300C
and the Freestyle to give the crossover a proper V8 to take on things like
the (more expensive) Cadillac cross over wagon (SRX or CRX... whatever that
thing is called) and the Dodge Magnum (with "has that thing got a HEMI"
power). All three Ford products are built on the P2 Volvo platform, and all
three are begging for a V8 engine (there using a 3.0L V6 right now...
something a titch over 200 horsepower).
